I believe that compact fluorescent light bulbs are the short term solutions to saving energy while also reducing emissions caused by power plants.

The only negative would be the mercury that is contained inside each of the bulbs. With proper recycling in place, contamination from the compact fluorescent bulbs should be minimal.

The next big step in saving energy will be the OLED or organic light emitting diode.
