Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists: For the last four years, a research team from Texas Tech University has studied the degree of radioactive contamination at the Al Tuwaitha Nuclear Research Center in Iraq.
Al Tuwaitha was the center of Saddam Hussein's nuclear weapons program. The site is in many ways historically unique: It has been used in the development of nuclear weapons; it has been bombed in repeated military campaigns; and it has been looted by civilians who in 2003 inadvertently dispersed radioactive material at and around the research site and in their own homes and villages.
