Quantum solution to 'arrow of time' dilemma raises skepticsm

guardian.co.uk: For all we know we may live in a world in which windows unbreak and cold cups of coffee spontaneously heat up, we just don't remember. The explanation is quantum entanglement, says Lorenzo Maccone at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but other physicists, such as Huw Price, head of the Centre for Time at the University of Sydney, remain skeptical.

I must state my skepticism with Lorenzo Maccone’s (of M.I.T.) theoretical study that backward running time events happen all of the time around us and that we observe such events all of the time but forget such events immediately after they occur .

If cups of coffee suddenly warmed up or broken windows suddenly re-assembled, one would expect if time reversal symmetry existed, then just as many backward time running events would occur as forward time running events on average.

Who would have poured the second cup of coffee that just happens to warm up or have assembled the whole plethora of technological artifacts in modern civilization in duplicity on average?

Put another way, if each time step in history past, present, and future, had its own unique pairing component, as a statistical duplicity component for time dependent events running backward that was paired with a statistical duplicity component for time dependent events running forward, who would reset the mass-energy-spatial-temporal energy states as each time interval for the forward running event ticked by such that on average, as long as my cup of coffee was on the able cooling, there would be another cup of coffee on the table that was warming by itself?

It seems to me that for every Planck Time Unit that a cup of coffee at my table cooled off in the forward direction of time, there would have to be on average a cup of coffee at my table the cooled down on average in a backward time running manner.

How would the integrity of causality continue in an ordered manner under such condition? If I am alone at my breakfast table, who would have been there to have poured the other cup of coffee? Why should I remember time dependent events running one way and absolutely no such events running backward if time reversal symmetry was perfect for macro states as well as microstates? How would nature choose only one such set of memories and none of the backward running events?

If the two cups of coffee are superposed in space, such that in the one forward running coffee history, my coffee cools down while in the backward running history, the coffee cup warms up, then the net effect should be the observance of a cup of coffee that does not cool down at all, nor warms up, or perhaps more likely, the cup of coffee would be observed not to cool down in a way that is predicted or mathematically modeled by the basic rules of radiative heat loss, convective heat loss, and conductive heat loss.

The result of two car collision if a forward running state and a backward running state were superposed histories whereby the sum over histories approach would result in the macro state being a super-position of the forward and backward running states, then the wreckage patterns and other kinematical aspects of the crash would at the very least, dramatically deviate from the predictions of Newtonian Mechanics and accident reconstruction specialists.

If such superposition did exist, then how would it per due as the forward history branch progressed wherein the super-posed backward and forward running histories would be jointly reset for each Planck Time Unit of forward time progression for the forward running half of the joint macro state?

This brings us to contemplate a perhaps even more bazaar situation that at every forward progression time step of time at the level of the Planck Time Unit, perhaps each macro state is a simultaneous super-position of a whole plethora of possible history states, and that each time step of each macro state is comprised of a sum over histories superposition of many possible if not all possible histories, but perhaps wherein for each Planck Unit time step, the set of all possible histories or the many possible histories that defines a given macro state is completely reset with its unique sum of the then possible histories. In other words, the coherence life time of each macro state as a sum over such histories for each Planck Time Unit may simply be equal to the Planck Time Unit or about 5 x 10 EXP - 44 seconds or more precisely tp = {[[h/(2 pi)]G]/(C EXP 5)} EXP 2. Note that I use the phrase coherence lifetime here in the sense that the subject superposition of histories would maintain its non-collapsed superposed wave-function-state for each Planck Time unit wherein the upon each such wave function collapse, the actual real history of the macro state in question would become certain, and not some nebulous neither here nor there kind of state. Also, some form of continuity would be required within the makeup of each macro state as the Planck Time Units ticked by, whereby a relatively continuous time dependent, evolution of the macro state would continue even though time is descreetized at the level of the Planck Time Unit. Thus, there would have to be some sort of morphological continuance based transference of the macro state or car crash situation from one time step to another.

One thing that I like to contemplate is how would two quantum-mechanically entangled systems remain entangled or be able to manifest quantum information teleportation for the case that one set of entangled photons or atoms was at rest in a laboratory on Earth while the other set of entangled photons was carried along in some sort of antimatter matter annihilation powered rocket on steroids that somehow reached a relativistic gamma factor of a value of 1/{[1 - [(v/C) EXP 2]]EXP (1/2)} = [5 x 10 EXP - 44] EXP -1. After all, in such a case, one Planck Unit Ship Time would correspond to one second Earth time. Moreover, in one Planck Time Unit ship time, the space craft would travel 3 x 10 EXP 8 meters!

What a bizarre bazaar of quantum quandaries!

I also disagree with the Maccone “resolution” of the problem of the arrow of time: http://xxx.lanl.gov/abs/0912.1947
