Space.com: On 12 August, Copenhagen Suborbitals, a nonprofit group funded by private donations and sponsorships, launched a homemade space capsule to test the capsule’s safety systems. The capsule was launched from a floating platform in the Baltic Sea using the Launch Escape System (LES). The LES would normally be used to separate the capsule from a malfunctioning rocket. However, the LES spun out of control, and the capsule crashed into the water because it was released too low for the parachutes to deploy properly. Nevertheless, the Copenhagen Suborbitals team was pleased with the test; they believe they are much closer to their goal of inexpensive suborbital human spaceflight.
